Our former Binibining Pilipinas Queen of the Pacific,1971 is not just all beauty but a timeless passion and talent thrown into achieving a healthier society! A true woman of substance!

Nelia Sancho has a sterling record of her battle for human rights, particularly that of women and children. She has had over twenty years of experience in the field of women and human rights movement. She has taken on various roles in her struggle to improve the rights of women in the Philippines and all over the world. She has served as a researcher, an organizer, an activist, a lobbyist, and a coordinator which includes five years (1990-1995) of program coordination, internationally, for the Asian Women Human Rights Council.

She has written extensively on issues surrounding women’s human rights in various publications including Manila Standard (1985 & 1986) and Zed Book (1997, “Gender and Catastrophe,” edited by Ronit Sentia), among others.

Between 1990-2000, she acted as an NGO representative in different international gatherings, involving special sessions on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and other divisions in the UN. UN Representation was through the Asian Women Human Rights Council, which has consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council.

Nelia has participated in various United Nations international conferences such as the UN World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna, Austria in 1993, the UN International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, Egypt in 1994, the UN World Summit on Social Development in Copenhagen in 1995, the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijeng also in 1995 and at the 1994, 1995, 1996 and 2000 Sessions on the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland. As an NGO Representative, Nelia also acted as a lobbyist for issues on women and children at the United Nations Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Establishment of an International Criminal Court held in Rome, Italy in 1998.

Nelia coordinated two world public hearings on women’s human rights in Tokyo on March 1994 and in Cairo on September 1994 dealing with issues on women trafficking, war cries on women and crimes against women related to population policies. She worked largely on the “comfort women” issues, specifically in the Philippines, for nine years between 1992-2001. She has initiated research and has helped victims take legal actions against their offenders. Additionally, in 1994, she has initially organized and founded the Lila Filipina and later in 2002, she created a second organization called the AWHRC Lolas Kampanyera (LOLAS) to provide a support group for “comfort women” survivors.

In 1998, Nelia attended the UN ESCAP Regional Conference on Trafficking in Women in Bangkok, Thailand to formulate a draft accord and plan of action to combat women trafficking (the sale and transport of women and children for forced labor, slavery and slavery-like practices). In addition, she became the editor of the AWHRC (Manila office) and published the books as “War Crimes on Asian Women – Military Sexual Slavery by Japan, and “The Case of Filipino Comfort Women”, Book 1 and Book 2. Book 1 was published in 1993 followed by Book 2 in 1998.

On January 1999, Nelia was designated as NGO representative and Adviser of the official Philippine delegation to the Ad Hoc Committee in the Elaboration of a Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. Nelia is an internationally acclaimed political fighter whose passion to improve the lives of others, particularly those who could not stand up for themselves. She understands the problems that afflict many women and children and will continue to push her struggle in the provincial level, if you give her the chance. While her previous crusade has been surrounding women and children, it does not stop there. Give her the chance to fight for you. Give her your vote of confidence that she will help uplift your lives in ways you have not realized you can.
